ULTRASONIC TESTING (UT)
Empire offers standard ultrasonic testing (UT) inspection services for the identification and location of discontinuities, material structure analysis, and wall thickness measurements as a non-destructive testing (NDT) principal.
Ultrasonic weld inspection, frequently defined as UTFD/UT, is widely used to inspect the consistency of weld joints in pipe lines, vessels, columns, and structures in the oil and gas industry, as well as many other industries. This practice is usually used in these industries because of several of benefits, including portability, ease of use and consistency in performance. Ultrasonic inspection can identify, locate, and measure surface and subsurface detects in metals, including flaws too small to be identified by other methods.
- When using a proven process, internal flaws can be found and sized.
- Thick specimens take no longer to analyze than thin specimens, assuming proper instruments setup.
- Ultrasonic testing requires only one side of the component to be examined; there is no radiation risk, therefore there is no disruption of work as with radiography;
- Volumetric and crack-like defects can be detected.
